Here Are Some Myths Regarding IPv4 Addresses
The world’s Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) have been running out of IPv4 addresses since 2011. However, the transition towards IPv6 has not been as smooth as it was supposed to be.
It’s been almost 6 years since IPv4 depletion started; but here it is, showing no signs of annihilation. Uncertainties regarding the IPv4 have constantly mounted.
Let’s take a look at some myths revolving around it:
Myth: IPv6 Will Replace IPv4
When organizations started employing IPv6, it was believed that slowly and gradually, IPv4 will be replaced. However, it wasn’t as simple. Stakeholders and their customers previously using IPv4 were not willing to change because of the costs and complexities involved in moving to IPv6.
However, it should be mentioned that the myth is not entirely false. IPv6 will eventually replace IPv4, but that may take quite a few years.
For the near future, it would be safe to assume that both IP addresses will co-exist.
Myth: Dedicated IP addresses Improve SEO
From content to usability features, search engines take a lot of factors into account when ranking websites.
However, usage of dedicated IP address is not one of these factors. This means that your organization is free to experiment with different IP addresses.
Myth: End Users Will Not Feel Any Difference When Complete Transition to IPv6 Has Been Made
This is true on some levels. Let us clarify: if you are an average laptop or smartphone user with a relatively recent Operating System, the transition will not affect you as much.
However, if you use routers that do not support the dual-stack feature, you may have to get them replaced to a newer version. This will affect hardcore gamers, as they will need to change a few devices and configurations.
Myth: You Need a Separate IPv4 for Every Other VPN You Employ
Using the Network Address Translation (NAT), you can host multiple VPN lines without being limited to the number of IP addresses. Simply put, this means that IPv4 allows you to cater to different VPN customers.
Myth: IPv6 Gives Better Quality of Service than IPv4
This myth is due to the fact that IPv6 has some built-in header fields that can identify different flows and types of traffic. However, this feature is optional and many users do not opt for this. Moreover, IPv4 has similar optional features with similar purposes, which keeps the two of them on an equal level as far as the quality of service is concerned.
